I was emailed concerning this previous blog post and have been enlightened with characters that are currently thought to diagnose the philonthines: 1) absence of an empodial brsitle; 2) a single pair of macrosetae on the anterolateral angles of the mentum.These characters are in fact present in Ecitophytes coniceps.

Ahh, a much better reason to believe that this species belongs to Philonthina then “I don’t know, I just think so, gestalt-gestalt” – an answer I give a little too often.
